Multiplication challenge

PE: Monday and Wednesday. Children should come to school in their PE kits on these days.

Please ensure children's uniform, PE kit and swimming kit is clearly labelled with their name.

Reading

Reading should be done for 10 minutes daily. The children's reading records should be signed and bought in every Wednesday. Once the book has been read the children will then choose a new book to read at home.

Times Tables

Times tables should be being learnt at home, as well as in school. This is in readiness for the Multiplication Check, which will be done in June. The children can practise their times tables by, saying them out loud and writing them down. Year 4 will need to have quick recall as well as knowing them well.

Swimming

As part of the National Curriculum, Year 4 will be going swimming on Wednesday mornings. It is part of their school day and essential for all children to attend. Please ensure your child has the correct kit in school. I would encourage children to bring their kit (swimming trunks/costume, a towel and a hat for girls) in on a Monday morning.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Duka and Mrs Khan

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

Year 4 will have their Multiplication Tables Check in June, the dates will be confirmed later on in the year. It is important that all year 4 pupils practise their times tables for speed as well as accuracy. The check consists of 25 questions and the children have 6 seconds to answer each question.

Use the link below to practise as it is in the same format as the actual check.

Religious Education - We Pray, We Learn, We Discern

Religious Education helps children to deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith while also learning about other religions and beliefs. Following the Salford Diocese curriculum enables us to reach our mission to effectively develop children's faith and values and for pupils to explore Bible stories, prayer, the Church year, and the teachings of Jesus, linking these to their own lives and experiences.

Our focus topics are:

  • Creation and Covenant: Reflecting on God’s relationship with humanity and the responsibilities of being part of his creation.

  • Prophecy and Promise: Studying how God’s promises and the messages of the prophets point towards salvation and Hope.

  • Galilee to Jerusalem: Pupils follow Jesus’ ministry, learning about his teachings, miracles, and the path that leads to his passion

  • Desert to Garden: Focuses on the events of Holy Week and Easter, exploring themes of suffering, resurrection, and new life.

  • To the end of the Earth: Pupils consider the mission of the Church and how Christians are called to share the Good News, linking Scripture.

We aim to create an environment where each child feels appreciated and inspired to develop  their faith, compassion, and understanding through a variety of prayers, conversation and creative activities.

English

The Year 4 English curriculum builds pupils’ skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening through a wide range of engaging text types. Children learn to write explanation texts, fantasy stories, playscripts, themed narratives and information leaflets, developing creativity and clear organisation of ideas. They also explore issues and dilemmas, produce non-chronological reports and persuasive writing, and take part in debates to strengthen their ability to present viewpoints and use effective language. Throughout the year, pupils expand their vocabulary, improve grammar and punctuation, and grow in confidence as thoughtful, skilled communicators.

Maths

The children will be developing and expanding their know knowledge across a wide range of mathematical topics. This will include:

  • Place Value – understanding the value of digits in numbers and how they help us read, write, and order numbers.

  • Decimals – exploring tenths, hundredths and thousandths and how this can link to multiplying and dividing deciamls.

  • Addition & Subtraction – developing efficient methods and solving real-life problems.

  • Multiplication & Division – strengthening times tables knowledge and learning formal written methods.

  • Fractions – finding fractions of amounts, comparing and ordering, and exploring equivalent fractions.

  • Angles – identifying and measuring angles.

  • Measurement – working with units of length, mass,  area, perimeter and time.

  • Statistics – collecting and interpreting data using graphs and tables.

Throughout the year, children will apply their learning through practical activities, problem-solving challenges, and reasoning tasks to help develop an understanding of how Maths applies to the world around them.

Science

In Year 4, pupils develop their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills through exciting investigations and practical learning. Following the Developing Experts approach, children explore key topics such as living things and habitats, states of matter, sound, electricity, and the human body. They learn to ask scientific questions, make predictions, carry out fair tests, record results, and explain what they have discovered using accurate scientific vocabulary. Pupils are encouraged to think like scientists by observing carefully, identifying patterns, and drawing conclusions. By the end of the year, children are confident in explaining scientific ideas and understanding how science helps us make sense of the world around us.

Geography

Our Geography focus this year is  ‘The United Kingdom’. Children will explore how the United Kingdom is divided into counties, identifying unique food, wildlife and culture. They will also use their map skills to find physical and human features. They will expand their geographical vocabulary as they work through the units, learning and applying new words.

'Europe'. The children will deepen their understanding of European geography. hildren will develop their locational knowledge and their understanding of physical and human features. They will explore the similarities and differences between northern, southern, western and eastern Europe, focusing on the climate, culture, key landmarks and various human and physical features. They will become familiar with the flags of Europe's 44 countries as well as some important capital cities.

'Volcanoes, Mountains and Earthquakes'. The children are going to develop an understanding of the key aspects of: Physical geography, including: climate zones, biomes and vegetation belts, rivers, mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle.

History

The History focus this year are:

‘Early Civilisation’. The children will consolidate knowledge and understanding when and where civilisation began, how the writing system had come into place, along with exploring buildings and architecture of the early civilisation.

'Ancient Egyptian'. The children will be focusing on how they wrote using pictures called Hieroglyphs and created paper from a plant called Papyrus. Pharaohs were the rulers, and they were very powerful. People in Ancient Egypt were farmers, builders, and craftsmen, and their culture left a lasting mark on history.

'Anglo Saxons'. Children will place the Anglo-Saxons on a timeline and find out who was living in Britain when they first invaded.  Children will understand what an archaeologist does before finding out about the discovery of the burial ship at Sutton Hoo. Year 4 will generate questions they would like to find the answer to regarding everyday life in Anglo Saxon Britain, including areas such as homes, food and leisure. They will use a variety of sources of information to find the answers.

Spanish

The children will begin a new Spanish scheme that is created to build their confidence in both spoken and written Spanish. This is displayed through a wide range of engaging activities, songs, and games, where they will expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and start to form simple conversations with one another.

PSHE: We Pray, We learn, We Discern.

The SCARF curriculum in Year 4 PSHE helps pupils to develop important skills for their health, wellbeing, relationships and personal safety. Through engaging lessons, children learn about managing emotions, building positive friendships, staying safe online and offline, understanding their bodies, and making responsible choices. SCARF encourages pupils to reflect on their feelings and behaviour, respect others, and grow in confidence, supporting them to become resilient, caring and informed individuals.
