Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

We would like to welcome you to Year 2 where everybody is special. We love to explore and work together to learn exciting things. Come and explore our class page to find all sorts of useful information and to find out what we have been getting up to!

Spellings are tested every Friday, please make sure your child has their spelling book is in school with them. 

 

Your child's reading book change will either be Monday or Wednesday, they know which day themselves. 

 

Please encourage your child to practice their spellings and read at home. 

 

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child comes to school in their PE kit on these days.  

 

 

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. We will be available to answer any questions at the end of the day at pick up time.

Spring Term in Year 2

English 

This half term, we are looking at stories by the same author, with a focus on Julia Donaldson. We will read a range of her books with a focus on 'The Smeds and The Smoos'. The Children will be learning to identify key themes, characters and story structures. Through discussion, reading comprehension and creative writing activities. Pupils will develop their vocabulary, understanding of storytelling and confidence in expressing their own ideas.

The children will also be learning how to write leaflet, using their scientific knowledge about plants. This will be done through reading, discussion and writing activities. Year 2 will develop their research, organisation and writing skills whilst learning to communicate information effectively.

 

During the second half of the term, we will be learning about stories with a familiar setting. Children will explore stories set in places they know, helping them understand characters, events and settings. This will achieved through reading, discussion and creative writing. Pupils will also develop their comprehension, vocabulary and storytelling skills whilst learning to express their own ideas in writing.

Year 2 will also be learning about persuasive writing. Children learn how to write to convince or influence others, exploring techniques such as giving reasons, using persuasive language and organising their ideas clearly. This will be done through reading, discussion and writing activities. Pupils will develop their communication, vocabulary and writing skills whilst learning to express their ideas effectively.

 

Phonics

In Phonics, we follow Little Wandle to develop strong reading and spelling skills. Children will learn to recognise and blend sounds, read and write words and build confidence in decoding texts. Through daily lessons, engaging activities and regular practice pupils will develop fluency, comprehension and a love of reading.

Maths 

This term the children will be deepening their understanding and knowledge in a range of mathematical areas. They will also be applying their knowledge through practical activities, problem solving challenges and reasoning tasks.  

Money - Children will learn to recognise and use coins and notes, understand their values, and solve practical problems involving addition and subtraction.

Multiplication & Division - Pupils will learn to recall and use multiplication and division facts, recognise patterns, and solve practical problems. Through practical activities, visual representations and real-life examples pupils will develop their confidence, fluency, and problem-solving skills with numbers.

Length & height - Children will learn to measure and compare lengths and heights using standard units, and solve problems involving addition and subtraction of measurements.

Mass, capacity & Temperature - Year 2 will learn to measure, compare and record mass, capacity and temperature using standard units.

 

Throughout this term, the children will be applying their learning through hands-on activities and real-life examples. This will develop develop their confidence, problem-solving skills and understanding of maths is applied in the world around them.

RE

Religious Education is at the heart of our learning. It helps all children—whatever their faith background—grow in understanding, respect, and spiritual awareness, while deepening their own connection with God.

 

This year we are following Lighting the Path, which supports our mission to nurture children’s faith and values in a meaningful and inclusive way.

Galilee to Jerusalem - Pupils explore important stories from the life of Jesus, learning about his teachings, miracles, and journey with his followers. Through storytelling, discussion and creative activities, children discover values such as kindness, forgiveness, courage and friendship. Children will also think about how these ideas can be used in their own lives while learning to respect different beliefs.

Desert to Garden - This unit focuses on the Easter story, helping the children to learn about the important events in the last part of Jesus’ life, including his time in the desert and in the Garden of Gethsemane. Through stories, discussions and creative activities, pupils will explore ideas like courage, forgiveness. and kindness. They will also think about how these values can help them in their everyday lives.

PSHE

Keeping Safe - Children learn how to keep themselves safe at home, at school, online, and in the wider world. This is done through stories, discussion, and practical activities. Pupils will explore topics such as trusted adults, personal boundaries, making safe choices, helping them to build confidence, resilience and an understanding of how to look after themselves and others.

Rights and Respect - Children will learn about their rights and responsibilities and how to treat others with kindness and fairness. This will be achieved by reading and discussing stories, class/ group discussion and practical activities. Pupils will explore topics such as listening to others, caring for the environment, understanding how their choices affect people around them, helping them to develop respect, empathy and a sense of responsibility.

Some examples of our work: 

Science

During this term the children will be exploring to different topics: Plants and Animals Including Humans (growth). 

Plants - children learn to identify and name common plants and trees, understand what plants need to grow and stay healthy, and explore how plants change over time. This will be achieved by conducting hands-on investigations and observation, developing scientific skills, curiosity and understanding of the natural world.

Animals Including Humans (growth) - children will be learning about the growth and development of humans and other animals, exploring how living things change as they grow older. They will do this through observation, discussion, and simple investigations. Pupils will develop an understanding of healthy growth, basic needs and caring for living things, all whilst building their scientific knowledge and curiosity.

Art

This term Art has been all about the Earth, 'Earth Art'.

Year 2 have been exploring and creating artwork using natural materials found in the environment, inspired by artists who work with nature. We have achieved this learning by getting involved in hands-on activities, experiments with colour, texture, shape and pattern, all whilst  developing creativity, observation skills and an appreciation and respect for the natural world.

History

This term, we will be learning all about Florence Nightingale and her important role in improving hospitals and nursing. We will explore her early life, her work during the Victorian era, and what hospitals were like in the past compared to today. Children will learn how Florence Nightingale helped make hospitals cleaner and safer, and how her ideas still influence modern nursing and healthcare.

Geography

This term in Geography, we will be learning about the United Kingdom. Children will explore the four countries of the UK, their capital cities, flags, and surrounding seas. They will also learn about human and physical features, use simple maps, and begin to understand what makes different places in the UK similar or different.

Computing 

Questioning:

Children will develop their skills by asking and answering questions. They will learn how to collect information, make choices, and use technology to help them represent data. 

Creating pictures: 

Children will use digital tools to draw, colour, and design their own images. They will develop their creativity while learning how to use technology safely and confidently.

Coding: 

Children will create simple programs by giving instructions and using sequences. They will learn how coding helps computers follow commands and begin to develop problem-solving and logical thinking skills.

 

Physical Education

Throwing: 

Children will practise throwing with control and accuracy, using different equipment. They will learn how to improve their technique, work safely, and take part in simple games and activities.

Dodgeball: 

Children will practise throwing, catching, and dodging skills while following simple rules. They will develop teamwork, coordination, and confidence through fun and active games.

Jumping: 

Children will practise different jumping skills, including jumping for distance and height. They will develop strength, balance, and coordination through fun activities and challenges.

Dance: 

Children will explore different movements, rhythms, and simple choreography. They will develop coordination, creativity, and confidence through fun dance activities and performances.

Music 

Children will enjoy creating and performing music together by exploring fun songs and activities to develop their singing, rhythm, and listening skills. They will learn musical vocabulary and be given the opportunity to explore some musical instruments.
