Literacy
This term, will be looking at classic stories such as Peter Rabbit. Children will recognise the features of a story. They will be able to sequence them correctly. Children will then be able to adapt this story and create their own, changing the characters and events.
In the second half of this term, children will be focusing on Instruction texts. They will recognise the features of these texts such as imperative verbs, headings, putting instructions in the correct order. Once they can identify these, they will be able to follow a set of instructions and also create their own.
In this term, children will also focus on recognising when to use full stops, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks.
Phonics
In phonics, children will develop their phonics skills using the Little Wandle scheme. They focus on reading and spelling words, blending sounds to read confidently, and writing simple sentences. The work helps children become more confident readers and writers while using their phonics knowledge in everyday reading and writing.
Numeracy
Place value (within 20) - understanding numbers from 11-20 and being able to recognise them in different formats. One more and one less of an amount. Putting numbers in order and recognising them on a number line.
Addition and subtraction (within 20) - adding and subtracting by using number bonds, finding the difference and doubles.
Science
Exploring Everyday Materials - Children will learn how to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. They also learn how to identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. They describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials. They will also learn how to compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.
RE
This year we are following Lighting the Path, which supports our mission to nurture children's faith and values in an inclusive way.
Galilee to Jerusalem
In this topic, children will learn about Jesus’ journey from Galilee to Jerusalem. They will listen to stories about Jesus helping people, teaching others to love and care, and showing how to be kind. Children will explore how Jesus is a light and a guide for Christians and how his actions help people make good choices.
PSHE
Keeping safe - In this topic, children will learn how to keep themselves safe at school, at home, and when out and about. They will talk about trusted adults, understanding feelings, and knowing when and how to ask for help. Children will also learn simple rules to help them stay safe and healthy every day.
History
In Year 1 History, pupils learn about famous explorers from the past and present, including Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. Children explore who these explorers were, where they travelled and why they are remembered. They will begin to understand the idea of the past and how exploration has changed over time and how this has influenced travel now.
Art
This term, children will look at a variety of artists and their styles and whether they use paints, pencils, crayons or any other materials. They will identify the different techniques used within the artwork and then will be able to use these to create their own work.
Music
This term, children will be looking at how music is made up of high and low sounds, long and short sounds, and loud and quiet sounds. Children will learn these sounds and create their own very simple melodies.
Computing
Data Explorers
Children will look at collecting data and imputing it in a table. They will look at showing data through pictures. Children will be collecting information about different topics and creating a pictogram using Purple Mash.
Creating and following instructions
children will understand what an algorithm is and how to present a set of instructions onto a programme. They will follow and create simple instructions on a device. Children will sequence algorithms onto a website.
P.E.
Bouncing - This term in PE, children will learn how to bounce a ball safely and with control. They will practice using two hands and one hand to bounce the ball while standing still and moving. Children will focus on keeping their eyes on the ball, using gentle pushes.
Athletics - This term in PE, Year 1 students will learn basic athletics skills through running, jumping, and throwing activities. They will practise moving safely in space and following simple instructions. The children will work on improving their coordination, balance, and control while taking part in fun games and challenges.
